100 Years of Black Craft in Tennessee
Welcome to our collaborative and growing project–a series of exhibitions and community engagements featuring Black artists active in the state of Tennessee from 1920 to 2020.
Here you can visit past, current, and future exhibitions, learn more about our scholars and partners, add your suggestions, and–most importantly–explore Tennessee’s talented Black artists from the past century.
Use the search bar at the top to identify artists by name, region, city, or medium. Currently, only artists from the first exhibition have individual posts, but come back for more soon!

The Crafting Blackness exhibitions encourage us to think outside of the classroom, outside of ourselves and outside of the box. Featured crafters are artists who expose and share personal, historical, and philosophical moments, journeys. These journeys are crafted thorough a host of mediums with the defining lens of their personal witness of being Black.
