Thandiwe Shiphrah

I create abstract paintings, collages, and mixed-media assemblages that focus on interiority, the dynamics of human relationships, and living in harmony with self and nature.

My work often reflects my love of music, particularly jazz and R&B, and a longstanding fascination with the look, sound, and meaning(s) of words. Much of my art emerged from a curiosity about the origins of common phrases in the English language and playful experimentations with lettering.

Repurposing previously owned and unwanted materials is a consistent practice. I collect found objects and interesting items sourced from yard sales, thrift stores, and creative reuse centers. I like to alter and recontextualize these materials to create a dream-like image, and sometimes the image will inspire a poem or a performance.
