Christine Roth

My work is a meditation on the profound impact of my two-year journey through South Korea—a period that redefined my understanding of beauty and craft. Immersed in the everyday artistry of Korean life, I found myself captivated by the subtle yet powerful language of shape and form, especially evident in traditional pottery. The pieces I encountered were not merely vessels but tactile narratives, where each curve and contour spoke of time, culture, and the unspoken human connection with the earth.

I am particularly drawn to the unique allure of tactile glazes—uneven, craggly, and a bit rough. This deliberate departure from immaculate perfection invites the viewer to engage not only with the visual aspects of my work but also with its tactile story.

By infusing my art with my own personality and creative impulses, I strive to forge a dialogue between tradition and individual expression. My interpretation is a loving nod to the rich heritage of Korean craft, yet it is distinctly mine—a fusion of the ancient and the modern, where precision meets playfulness, and ritual craftsmanship is reimagined through the lens of personal memory and emotion.

Ultimately, my work seeks to capture the transient beauty of imperfection and the joy of creative exploration. It stands as a testament to my transformative time in South Korea, a journey that continues to inspire me to push the boundaries of form, texture, and expression in the pursuit of art that feels as human and unpredictable as life itself.

Christine Roth is a ceramic artist based in Clarksville, Tennessee, where she has lived for the past 20 years. A proud member of a military family, Christine served in the U.S. Army for six years. Her artistic journey has been shaped by her life experiences, including a formative two-year residency in South Korea. It was there that she received her first Korean pottery pension and deepened her appreciation for traditional ceramic techniques and cultural aesthetics.

Christine now works out of her personal studio in Clarksville, where she creates a range of functional and sculptural ceramics. Her work often reflects the intersections of discipline, tradition, and storytelling inspired by her military background and international experiences. In addition to her studio practice, she shares her passion for pottery through teaching at the Clay Lady Artist’s Campus in Nashville, TN.
