Pam Faw
“I started in second grade and winning first contest really got me into art. At The Bertha Ellis Girls club on Chilwowie, I got more support and got to attend a summer class at ETSU in art. I have drawn most of my life and with recent retirement her time. I like different media, playing around with clay or repurposing materials to make things. All my life is adjusting to being the only black person in the room. I felt safe at Dunbar, but this was absent in the rest of my education at the local schools. Some of those feelings come out in my paintings to express my connection to my history, my Blackness, and Africa. I want to find my voice in my art.”
Pam Faw was born in 1959 and raised in Johnson City, as one of five kids. Her mother taught her crafts and as much as she could encouraged her to excel. She went to Dunbar Elementary School before it was desegregated. Pam won her first art contest in the second grade with a self-portrait. The prize was a Three Musketeers candy bar.
She graduated from Science Hill High School, then got her associate degree in electric technology. Worked for TN Eastman for 29 years. She also has education in mechanical drawing.
Pam paints what she feels. She likes to create things.
