Bill Johnson

Arts educator and Tennessee State University (Tennessee A&I University) alumni, Johnson taught art at Stratford High in Nashville, TN. Johnson received his first formal arts training at the Vancouver School of Art and traveled through Canada studying the art of Native peoples in the 1950s. He served as artist in residence at George Peabody College, and contributed to the local arts as President of Nashville Arts Guild 1970-71 along with chairman of Middle Tennessee Art Education Association. He exhibited his paintings and sculptures in local and national exhibitions. He won many awards from the Tennessee Arts Education Association and was featured frequently in the newspaper cataloged by his wife Elizabeth Johnson and donated to the Tennessee State University Department of Art and Design along with work spanning from 1949 to 1996. His collection at the university is a mixture of paintings, sculptures and photographs.
